Midland IRA Employees Believe in Community Service
Midland Trust serves as the Custodian for Midland 1031, Midland IRA and Midland Private Fund Custody products. We are a specialized company with goals of serving our clients, our team and our communities with offices in Fort Myers, Florida; Chicago, Illinois; and Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
“Thank you for calling Midland IRA…”; keyboards are clacking, the door opens, courier or client?, a meeting is held in the conference room; the Midland South office is bustling on Monday morning. Some of the employees are wearing jeans, some Midland shirts, most wear a logo-stamped fleece to keep warm in Florida air conditioning. The company’s goals and visions are posted all around the workplace. We are reminded that we are One with the North (Chicago) and Sioux Falls locations. We are reminded that we are humans, capable of providing a personal experience not only for our clients and for each other but for those in our communities that are in need; it’s a part of our culture.
We wear the Midland Serves t-shirts when we volunteer or deliver a check to the charity of choice. We choose who to give to. We choose the charities that are important to us; charities that we would give our own time and money to. The charity fund is made of voluntary employee contributions and is collected on a bi-weekly basis. Each office location participates in identifying opportunities to donate to or volunteer with. Midland’s Charitable Committee meets quarterly to determine how to administer the funds after carefully reviewing each suggestion. The Southwest Florida Community Foundation safely holds the collected funds and will occasionally offer a charity suggestion of their own. In 2018 they introduced Midland to Valerie’s House.
Midland IRA’s South Office Participates in Community Outreach
We arranged a meeting to visit the historic home in downtown Fort Myers. The cheery yellow victorian-style home is named after the late mother of Founder, Angela Melvin. The first thing you see upon walking through the door is a shelf filled with teddy bears of all sizes and colors. The bears are donated to the organization and given to the home’s special guests to offer comfort during their visit. Locations now include Naples and Punta Gorda.
Angela was very young when she lost her mother and felt that she suffered in grief alone. Years later she would establish Valerie’s House where children who have experienced the loss of a loved one could visit to find comfort and healing surrounded by others who understand their pain. According to an article found in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, when a child loses someone they shared a close bond with that loss may contribute to risks associated with negative outcomes in adulthood, but with early intervention and support these risks can be decreased. Our staff decided unanimously that we would become a trusted sponsor in supporting this one-of-a-kind organization so that they can reach further and do the most good. We’ve proudly offered support for the last two years and will continue to do so in the future to ensure that expansion can continue.
Other charities of choice for 2019 include the ReLeaf Sioux Falls project in South Dakota and Chicago Police Memorial Foundation. To learn more about Midland and our culture, including charitable giving, be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
